My Espoo on the map resident survey responses

The My Espoo on the Map resident survey was carried out in both autumn 2020 and autumn 2024.

2020

My Espoo on the map resident survey was carried out in the fall of 2020. About 6,600 Espoo residents from different parts of the city responded to the survey. Respondents made approximately 70,000 entries and comments on the map survey. The survey was carried out in cooperation with Aalto University as a survey open to everyone, a sample survey and a survey tailored for children and young people. The questionnaire for children and young people was mainly answered by 6th and 9th graders.

The survey's map markings (excl. home markings) are distributed as open data. The map entries contain information about the question categories of the survey and the main categories of the answers. The material does not contain entries related to the respondents' background information or home, nor the answers written by the respondents themselves. Not all questions have been asked of children and young people.

The map markings related to everyday places and special places also contain information about the mode of transport and experiencing the place.

The location accuracy of map markings received from respondents in a map survey can vary greatly between different respondents. The answers contain both broadly and very precisely marked map markings. The answer data may also contain some unintentionally marked map markings.

Published data:

  • Places in everyday life ("Arjen paikat")
  • Specific places ("Erityiset paikat")
  • Suitable places for construction ("Rakentamisen paikat")
  • Centers ("Keskukset")
  • Development ideas ("Kehittämisideat")

2024

The My Espoo on the Map resident survey was also conducted in autumn 2024. Approximately 5,000 Espoo residents from across the city responded to the survey. Well over one third of the respondents were children and young people. In total, respondents made more than 55,000 map entries and comments.

The survey was carried out in cooperation with Aalto University as an open survey, a sample-based survey, and a version tailored specifically for children and young people. The children’s and youth survey was mainly completed by lower secondary school students.

The map entries from the survey (excluding home locations) are shared as open data. The map data includes information on the survey question categories and the main categories of responses. The dataset does not contain respondents’ background information, home-related entries, or written responses provided by participants. Not all questions were asked of children and young people.

Entries related to everyday places and especially important locations (“Espoo Gems”) also include information about modes of transport and users’ experiences of these places.

In map-based surveys, the positional accuracy of location data provided by respondents may vary considerably. The dataset includes both roughly and very precisely marked locations. Some entries may also include points unintentionally marked by respondents.

Published datasets:

  • Everyday places, including the following categories: workplace or place of study; daycare or school (own or child’s); shopping place; service location; cultural or hobby venue; recreational area; other everyday place
  • Espoo Gems (especially important places)
  • Places where more urban greenery is desired
  • Places where more biodiversity is desired
  • Development ideas related to places
