In spring 2017, the cities of Helsinki and Vantaa conducted a survey on residents’ perceptions and attitudes regarding the state of the environment, environmental protection and the development of the city.
The survey was aimed at a random sample of the population aged 18 to 74 in Helsinki and Vantaa. The sample size was 3,000 in Helsinki and 2,000 in Vantaa. In addition, the probability of picking within Vantaa was slightly different in different areas. The dataset contains the variable “aluepaino” (regional weight) that can be used to compensate for different sampling probabilities. This must be used if an analysis is done with the Vantaa respondents included. If the analysis is carried out on the Helsinki respondents only, this is not necessary.
For reasons of data protection, the answers to question series 2 have been removed from the data and the gender, income level, household size, free-time residence data and car ownership data have been removed from the respondent’s background information. In addition, age data is compiled into age groups.
About the coding of variables
The opinion questions are coded in the data in reverse to the numbers on the form (in Finnish).
- Question series 1: very often = 1, never = 5.
- Question series 3, 5, 6, 7: fully agree = 1, fully disagree= 5.
- Question series 4: very concerned = 1, not at all concerned = 4.
- Question series 8, 10, 11: very good = 1, very bad = 5.
- The coding of the question series 9 and the background variables corresponds to the numbering of the form.
- Age has been classified into 6 categories. The value of the variable is always the upper limit of the category.
