Data gatherin pilot in Helsinki: Traffic counting using machine vision

General description

Hourly counts of pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles at the intersection of Ratapihantie / Rautatieläisenkatu in spring 2023. The data was collected by Wapice Oy as a data collection pilot with one camera and machine vision. The data was originally collected on the IoT-TICKET platform, but is provided in this dataset as a static file that will remain available after the end of the pilot.

Purpose of use and description of quality

The data was acquired as a data collection pilot; the machine vision solution is mature and in production use elsewhere. Independent quality control of the data through e.g. manual control counts was not included in the project scope. However, for bicycle volumes the data can be compared to the nearby induction-based eco-counter counting station; the vision-based system reports 10-20% higher peak volumes. So far, no additional manual counts have been done to ascertain which result is closer to the actual volumes.
